Sample tool: reading time calculator
Sample free tool for the Sandbox Notes site: paste a note and see its word count and how long it takes to read at an adjustable reading speed.
This is a sample tool for the Sandbox Notes test site. It runs entirely in your browser; the text you paste is never sent anywhere.
How it works
The tool counts words with the browser’s own word segmentation, then divides by a reading speed in words per minute and rounds up to the next half minute. The default of 238 words per minute is the average silent reading rate for English non-fiction reported in a 2019 meta-analysis (see sources). Change it if you know your readers are faster or slower.
Limits
Reading speed varies with the reader, the language and the text. Use the result as an estimate for planning, such as how long to give people to read the notes before a meeting.
